Shades of Yesterday

■ Shades of Yesterday, 22″ x 30″, lithograph

I was thinking about what representation of time would look like on the forest floor. The resulting images were very fun with hidden information. I pulled presentation proof which shows the progression of all the layers. Layer 1 then layer 2 and layer 2 on layer 1. Then layer 3 and then layer 3 on 1 & 2. Then layer 4 and layer 4 on 1-3 and so on. Layer 5 on layer 1-4 and finally layer 6 on layers 1-5

■ Shades of Yesterday, 22″ x 30″, lithograph

Layer 1 is yellow and is the foundation supporting the other layers
Layer 2 is red and was created by transferring the image of giant maple leaves
Layer 3 is a strong blue. When it is printed over the yellow. it gives us blue and green.
The thing that is unseen is that the plate I used to make the image was a recycled plate. The previous image was of 4 fish and the deleted images of fish came back in part and can be seen in the blue if you look hard.
Layer 4 is a brown and provides details for the bird skeleton and some other details
Layer 5 is green and is also a recycled plate. The previous image was a McDonald’s burger wrapper. And once again parts of the wrapper came back to print. Things like the golden arches and the word hamburger can be seen if you look hard.
The recycled plates bring an element of lost and found that is not immediately apparent adding a subliminal element.
The image also includes some added pictorial elements ie. a photograph of some relatives that time has taken away their identity because no one wrote on the back of the photo who they were. Some canceled postage stamps documenting that there was something that was there but time has taken that information.
I wanted a piece of literature that had a very short life span so I bought a harlequin romance novel and tore out pages, one for each print. I like to think of this print as an archaeological dig on the forest floor.
